‘꿈을 쫓는 것을 포기하지 말고, 불가능을 가능으로 만들기 위해 노력해라’

국제 아티스트 4인전 및 한국 & 싱가포르 국제전시회가 5월 20일(금)(세계인의 날) 오후 2시부터 29일(일)까지 경기도 광주신문사의 주최로 경기도 광주시 남종면 태허정로 456<포토 앤 갤러리>에서 개최되었다.

이번 "별이 빛날 때, 선장은 웃는다" 국제 예술행사에서 싱가포르의 세계적인 작가 Gloria Keh의 작품 12점, 포르투갈 Paulo Duarte Filipe(포르투갈과 영국 활동)의 원작과 설치미술 12점과 <세계 지도선장의 원작자>인 유충열 작가의 그림 12점, 그리고 김유림 작가(광주신문 기자)의 그림 12점 등 48점의 작품을 국내 대중들에게 선보였다.

또, 지난 2021년 8월 코로나 19 상황에서 싱가포르에서 온라인으로 개최되었던 <한국과 싱가포르 두 나라간 평화를 위한 국제전시>에 참여한 작가 63명의 작품들이 MDF 아크릴 액자로 제작되어 전시되었다.

특히 이번 국제 예술행사는 유충열, 글로리아 푸케, 김유림 등이 참여해 포르투갈 작가이자 영화감독인 파울로 두아르테 필리페의 독창적인 아이디어로 기획되었으며, 따라서

Paulo는 런던에서 직접 개막행사와 영화 촬영을 위해 경기도 광주에 왔습니다.

따라서 광주신문은 그와 그가 관련된 다양한 활동에 대해 더 많이 알기로 결정했다.

<인터뷰>

□ Paulo Duarte Filipe는 누구인가?

- 저는 포르투갈에서 태어났지만 제가 자란 곳은 아프리카였습니다. 제가 생후 3개월 때 부모님이 앙골라에 가셨습니다. 거기서 12살까지 살았고 1975년에 내전 때문에 우리는 포르투갈로 다시 돌아왔습니다.

그 비극적인 사건은 내 인생을 영원히 바꿔놓았고, 당시 아주 어렸던 나는 우리 삶의 매 순간이 얼마나 소중한지 배웠습니다.

□ 그 때의 어떤 기억이 당신의 인생에서 그토록 중요합니까?

- 앙골라에 대한 내 기억이 가장 좋습니다. 내가 앙골라에 살았던 당시의 가장 분명한 증거는 아마도 내가 있는 사람일 것입니다. 오늘날에도 나를 가장 매료시키는 것은 공간/시간의 개념입니다.

아프리카에서 거리의 개념은 유럽에 존재하는 것과 다릅니다. 너무 멀리 있는 것은 없습니다. 필수 불가결한 것은 없습니다. 정말 중요한 것은 매 순간이 맨 처음 또는 맨 마지막 순간인 것처럼 사는 것입니다.

□ 당신은 여행을 많이 다니는 사람입니다. 당신이 세계의 시민이라고 말할 수 있습니까?

- 네, 사실 제 생각과 삶의 방식은 서구보다 훨씬 더 아프리카적입니다. 그러나 앙골라에서 살던 곳은 더 이상 없습니다. 내가 속한 나라가 없는 것 같아요. 세상은 나의 조국이고 기분이 좋은 곳이 나의 고향이 될 것이다.

□ 당신은 다양한 예술 분야에서 수상한 다면적인 예술가입니다. 결국, 당신의 예술은 무엇입니까?

- 내 작품의 개념적 구성을 상상하고 접근하는 방식은 내가 살았던 장소와 내가 경험한 삶의 경험을 명확하게 반영합니다. 나는 겉보기에 무질서하고 안절부절 못하는 창의적인 사람으로, 항상 불가능한 도전을 찾아 헤매고 있습니다.

내 예술에는 엄격한 방법이 없지만 그것이 내가 누구인지를 분명히 보여주는 증거입니다. 나는 항상 내가 중요하지 않다고 느꼈습니다. 내 예술이 중요한가? 아마 아닐거야. 그것은 정말 중요하지 않습니다. 영원한 것은 없습니다. 오직 우리의 본질, 우리의 에너지는 영원합니다.

□ 2018년에 이곳(한국)에 왔었고, 영화 "I, Captain Yoo"를 찍었습니다. 여기 왜 또 왔습니까?

- 저에게 한국은 특별한 매력과 마법을 가지고 있습니다. 사람들은 엄청난 친절함과 정을 가지고 있습니다. 여기 진짜 친구도 있고 코로나 시기에 여행을 하게 되자마자 이 프로젝트의 개막과 새 영화 촬영을 하기 위해 오게 되었으며, 이곳 경기도 하남과 광주에서의 촬영 "I, Captain Yoo“은 2018년의 연속입니다.

□ 예술적 여정에서 가장 기억에 남는 순간은 언제인가요?

- 강렬하고 다양한 예술 활동에서 나를 가장 두드러지게 만든 순간은 2014년 칸 영화제에서 단편 영화를 선정하고 7개의 단편 영화를 전시하고 니테로이, 브라질 현대 미술관에서 내 책을 발표한 것입니다.

하지만 사실, 나는 내가 한 일에 대해 생각하기 위해 많이 멈추지 않습니다. 내가 정말 좋아하는 것은 다음 프로젝트를 위해 다른 곳으로 빠르게 이동하는 것입니다.

□ 지금은 무슨일을 하고 있습니까?

- 나는 몇 가지 진행중인 프로젝트가 있습니다. 2편의 장편 영화와 3편의 예술 프로젝트가 상당히 발전된 단계에 있으며, 팬데믹 아트의 첫 번째 전시회는 이미 11월로 예정되어 있습니다.

팬데믹 아트는 내가 2월부터 시작한 새로운 세계적인 예술 운동으로, 코로나바이러스와 그로 인한 부작용의 출현 이후 예술이란 무엇인지 재정의하는 것을 목표로 하며, 수년 동안 지속되어 새로운 표준을 만들 것입니다.

□ 한국의 젊은 예술가들에게 전하고 싶은 메시지는?

- 주요 메시지는 꿈을 쫓는 것을 절대 포기해서는 안 되며 불가능을 가능으로 만들기 위해 노력해야 한다는 것입니다.

저명한 시인 포르투갈이 수년 전에 썼듯이 꿈은 삶을 지배합니다. 개념을 만들고 깨는 것을 두려워하지 마십시오. 다른 것을 두려워하지 마십시오. 너 자신이 되라.

It is taking place at the Photo and Image Gallery an international art exhibition called "When the stars shine, the Captain smiles". This event was created from an original idea of the Portuguese artist and film-maker Paulo Duarte Filipe, with the participation of Yoo Choong Yeul, Gloria Fu Keh and Kim Yoo Lim.

Paulo lives in London and came to Gwangju, Gyeonggi for the inauguration of the event and to make the shooting of the film.

Our newspaper decided to know more about him and the various activities in which he is involved.

□ Who is Paulo Duarte Filipe?

- I was born in Portugal, but it was in Africa where I grew up. My parents went to Angola when I was only 3 months old. I lived until i was 12 years old, and in 1975 we returned to Portugal because of the civil war that was destroying the country.

That tragic event has changed my life forever and , still very young , I learnt how precious can be every single second of our life.

□ What memories do you keep of that time so important of your life?

- My memories of Angola are the best possible. The person I am is perhaps the most evident proof of that time when I lived in Angola. Even today, what fascinates me most is the concept of space/time. In Africa, the concept of distance is different from what exists in Europe. Nothing is too far. Nothing is indispensable. What really matters is to live every second as it was the very first one or the very last one.

□ You are a person who travels a lot. Can we say that you are a citizen of the world?

- Yes, actually my way of thinking and being in life is much more African than Western. However, the places where I lived in Angola are no longer there. I feel like I don't have a country I belong to. The world is my country, and where I feel good, it will be my home town.

□ You are a multifaceted artist, awarded in various artistic disciplines. After all, what's your art?

- The way I imagine and approach the conceptual construction of my artistic works clearly reflects the places where I lived and the life experiences that I have been experiencing . I am a seemingly disorganized and restless creative person, always in search of impossible challenges. My art doesn't have a rigid method, but it is a clear evidence who I really am. I always felt that I am not important. Is it my art important? perhaps not. That it doesn't really matter. Nothing is eternal. Only our essence, our energy is eternal.

□ In 2018, you have been here and you done the movie “I, Captain Yoo”. Why did you come here again?

- For me, South Korea has a special charm and magic. People are of immense kindness and cordiality. I have real friends here and as soon as I was able to travel, in this time of coronavirus, I came here to the opening of this project and to do the shooting of this new movie, which is the natural continuation of "I, Captain Yoo", shot entirely here in Gwangju, Gyeonggi and Hanam, in 2018

□ What are the most memorable moments of your artistic journey?

- The moments that perhaps most marked me in these years of intense and varied artistic activity were to have a short film selected by the Festival de Cannes in 2014 and the exhibition of 7 short films and the presentation of my book at the Museum of Art Contemporary in Niteroi, Brazil. But actually, I don't stop much to think about what I've done. What I really like is moving quickly to the next project.

□ What are you doing now?

- I have several ongoing projects. Two feature movies and three art projects are in quite advanced stage and the first exhibitions of pandemic art are already scheduled for November. Pandemic art is a new worldwide art movement that I'have been launching since February and that aims to redefine what is art, since the arrival of coronavirus and the side effects it has caused and that will last for many years, creating a new normal.

□ What message would you like to give to the young artists in South Korea?

- The main message is that you should never give up on following your dreams and try to make the impossible in possible. As a noted poet Portuguese wrote many years ago, the dream commands Life. Don't be afraid to create and to break concepts. Don't be afraid to be different. Just be yourself.
